Fiberglass Repair

My Reno has a little bit of bow damage. It is located where the bow abuts the front roller, It appears that it is limited to just the gel coat. I bought a fiberglass repair kit to fix it and even if just a coat of gel coat would suffice I'm going to go ahead and put a layer of fiberglass just for extra support. My question is do I need to remove the gel coat everywhere that I intend to apply the fiberglass or would simply "roughing" up the area with some heavy grit sand paper be acceptable? I also believe that when the fibergless repair is complete I will need to re-apply some gel coat, something that I know absolutely nothing about. Where would I purchase gel coat and what is the best way to apply it, or is there another topcoat material/method that would be better?
