Damage estimates from Irene reach about $500 million.

The recent hurricane that hit the east coast caused substantial damages to boats and boating infrastructure. Those in the path of Hurricane Irene had plenty of warning or else damage figures would have been much higher. Damage estimates are as high as $500 million. The last hurricane to hit the U.S., Hurricane Ike in 2008, caused $200 million in damages.

Coastal areas obviously take the brunt of the storms when hurricanes head inland. High winds and water toss and destroy even large vessels like they were toys. Hurricane Irene that recently followed the east coast from one end to the other was no different.

Early reports from the Boat Owners Association of the United States (Boat US) indicate that this storm struck inland lake and river regions in New York and New England particularly hard, including the Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys, Lake George, Lake Champlain and Lake Winnipesaukee as well as Cape Cod.

The nation’s largest boat owner’s group estimates the total damage to recreational boats from South Carolina to Maine could total up to $500 million, which does not include damage to any boating infrastructure like piers, docks, etc.

The last hurricane to strike the U.S., Hurricane Ike in 2008, was estimated to cause $200 million in damage to recreational boats.
