Default Lower Unit

Hello,I am new to the forum. I have a 1980 Corson with a 1980 Mercury outboard. Just alittle boat I like to take out on the lakes here in Maine. It wasn't showing water coming out of the tattle tale stream so I decided to try to take the lower unit off to check the impellor/water pump. I can't get the lower unit to separate from the motor. All the bolts are loose and there is no obvious place I can see to disconnect the shift shaft. I am baffled. I can get it to separate about 1/4" and that's it. I have the SELOC manual and it makes no mention of the shift shaft. I keep mentioning the shift shaft because everyone tells me that is what is keeping it from coming apart. I even went so far as to take the motor off the boat, hang it upside down and spray degreaser inside and let it sit for days, but still no luck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
